Pondicherry is a union territory of the Indian sub-continent. It is a cultural hub, influenced by the southern states of the country. Various dance festival and cultural events are organized in Pondicherry to promote art, culture and music. Pondicherry folk dances are based on the cultural dances of Tamil Nadu state. The south Indian classical music forms the basis of the dance performed in Pondicherry. The Chidambaram Natyanjali Festival is organized annually on the festival of Shivratari in the region. This dance festival was initiated by Kapila Vatsayan and Nagaswamy in the year 1981. It has participants from all over the country.
